If Only...

Prologue

Its been three years since the university graduation, Dego still remembered that at that time his love was rejected by Janu, the girl he loves since the beginning they met in university. Since then, Dego trying to move on from the past, however, in reality, they are in the same company now that it makes their relation awkward.

 

The first time I saw her

It was in 2011, Dego reassured himself that he aims to study at one of the leading universities and majoring in accountants. He was so confident that graduated with a pretty good grade from one of the famous high school in the town can smooth his way to reach his dream. As he predicted, he was accepted into the university as the big five students with a good grade, and it made him suddenly famous among the new college student, the senior is no exception too. Until the inauguration time came, Dego was in the seventh group with fifteen members including him. His group was mentored by a calm and girly senior, she was Janu, two semesters older. Dego fall in love, at first sight he saw Janu. As the first day of the inauguration is over, once he arrived at home, he searched for any Janu’s social media, from Instagram, Facebook, Twitter until Tinder, it's kind of stalking rather than curious. Tired searching for Janu’s socmed, Dego trying to contact his group friend one by one, whether one of them know what is her socmed, yet no one knows. As Dego was so ambitious for his senior, it was already spread among the student in the next day that Dego interested in Janu, and as Dego feels that it makes no sense to feel ashamed, he finally asked directly to Janu for her number at the end of the second-day inauguration.

Janu: “why you are so possessed?”

Dego: “kind of love at first sight, perhaps”

Janu: “I already heard the story, your act is kind of stalker rather than a person who fall in love”

Dego: “ahaha…I’m sorry…”

Janu: “hope that nobody gives that kind of view to you”

Janu left Dego alone behind the accountant department building. Dego filled with question marks inside his head about what was the meaning of her word.

 

The path

After three months of Dego’s first semester, his relationship with Janu was so flat, not like a couple or lover who falls in love with each other. However, Dego has enough to already have Janu’s phone number, that it makes him contacting her or keep updated with Janu’s story. On the other hand, Janu feels annoyed that because her friends always curious about her relationship with Dego, as they never walk out or date together. Janu can not bear with all the questions headed to her as she thinks that it already made her insecure, so she called Dego to pick her from the class and with no minute Dego already in the front of Janu’s class. All eyes were on them as they walk down the stairs until at the parking park. Janu then talk to Dego;

 

Janu: “so, what do you want?”

Dego: “want for what?”

Janu: “all those stalking until I give you my number, and then we do nothing”

Dego: “you wanted something?”

Janu: “if only you know”

Dego: “know what??”

Janu: “do as you like from now on”

And again, Janu left Dego alone there.

As time goes by, there is a gap between their relation, as Janu's graduation was also nearer. Dego himself has no clue what will he do to his relationship with Janu, and all he can do is just focusing on his study as it was one of his dreams to study there. One week later, Dego just realized that his number blocked by Janu. Dego then tries to meet Janu in her class, but he can’t find her there until one of Janu’s friend tell Dego that Janu is already finished with her thesis, and she just need to do the final part, the graduation, which will be held one month later.

 

A step to…

Janu’s graduation has finally come. Dego came to the university hall to congratulate Janu for her graduation. As the event over, Dego meet Janu behind the hall. He congratulated her for her graduation and hoping her get a job she dreams of. Janu then talked to Dego;

Janu: “I’m sorry, it must be our last meet”

Dego: “no, I’m the one who must say sorry in the past didn’t understand your feeling”

Janu: “no, whatever happens, happens”

Dego: “I want to ask you, want you to be my lover, for one more time”

Janu: “I’m sorry, I can’t, that I will be not in this town anymore later”

Dego: “Oh...yeah, I know that. Thanks for letting me express my feeling, perhaps for the last time”

Janu: “I hope we both can move on from this relationship, see you in another time”

Janu left Dego for the last time, to meet her family call in the park. Dego then meets his friend to congratulate the other seniors, and it seems that his face showing a hollow emotion.

Two weeks later, Dego got info from Janu’s friend, that she now works for a multi-international company at the next town, but didn’t know what is the company name. Dego just feels so calm, and he knows that the thing he did to Janu was hurt her feeling and it was unacceptable.

One and a half years passed, Dego finally graduated with a pretty good grade. Since the rejection he got from Janu, he changed a lot, from his personality that be more attentive to the circumstances and feelings of others. He also got recommended by the rector to work for a big company, next to the town, but he prefers to be an apprentice in advance for half a year.

As Dego finished with his apprentice, he then took the recommendation from his rector to work at the company, and finally, he hired there in a good position. Until his eye catches an appearance that is not strange to him, he knows that she was Janu. He is surprised and also excited, that he can meet Janu again, at the same company, in unplanned circumstances. Dego then asked the security about Janu's profile in the company, that she got a chief of marketing department position, a little higher than Dego’s position now, and then he heads to the administration, asked for Janu’s phone number. One week later, the director held a meeting for company officials. Dego, who got a position as a sales advisor, arrived first in the room to prepare the meeting material, until all the officials come in and the person who was Dego most waiting for, Janu. Suddenly as Janu entered the room, she is so shocked that Dego was there, preparing the material she will hear later. Dego puts a smug face with a smile that can be known through his eyes. At the meeting, Janu can’t focus on the material as she still shocked by the reality that her “ex-lover” is at the same company as her, the director often reprimanded Janu for daydreaming.

 

Denouement

As the meeting over, all officials shake hands to each other. Janu waiting for her turn, wanting to talk to Dego, how the hell he can work in the same company as her. Dego knows that Janu wants to talk to him, so he also waiting until all officials leave the room. As there are only two of them in the room, Janu grumbled to Dego, wondering whether he still stalking her or not. Dego then explained what did happen to him, on how he can work at the same company as her.

Dego: “so, I was sponsored by the rector to this company, as you know, I’m still a smart person, graduated with a good grade”

Janu: “why so cocky”

Dego: “just kidding haha”

 Janu: “so, it seems like we got the same recommendation from the campus”

Dego: “lucky isn’t it?”

Janu: “(little smiling) I hope so”

Dego: “so…any other chances?”

Janu: “just let all flow as the time pass by, I’m sure the time will come”

 

Dego become awkward from her reaction, then Janu blushed and saying

 

Janu: “seems like you have changed, a lot, maybe”

Dego: “I hope so”

Janu: “if only you show this kind of personality since we first met, maybe we become more close than this”

Dego: “well, why don’t we start now?”

 

At first, they both feel awkward when they cross paths or there are just the two of them, confused about how to start the conversation as it’s already three years since their last meeting. Sometimes, they recalling the stupid things they did back then, like selfish towards each other's feelings and don’t care about the circumstances they faced. Both of them then become closer and closer, until all the employees in the company know that they are a lover. Until when there is a situation that forced Dego to work outside the town for a year. Dego undertakes the order, as he wants to strengthen his position in the company. Janu then make a promise towards Dego;

Janu: “please, contact me every time you can”

Dego: “sure, if you do not block my number”

Janu: “geez”

Dego: “whatever happens, happens. If only we can meet earlier”

Janu: “to meet you again after those years is just the wonderful thing all I can get”
